Health and Genetics

At Overlook Mountain Labradors, responsible breeding starts with a commitment to health, genetics, and ethical breeding practices. Every Labrador puppy we raise receives the highest level of care from birth, ensuring a strong foundation for a healthy and happy life.

The Overlook Standard

Raising AKC Labrador puppies is a full-time commitment, and we dedicate ourselves to producing well-bred, healthy companions. Each litter is whelped and raised in our home, where we provide around-the-clock care, socialization, and enrichment to set them up for success in their new homes.

All pet and companion puppies are sold on AKC Limited Registration, meaning they are intended for loving homes rather than breeding programs.

Each Overlook Labrador puppy receives:
✅ Age-appropriate vaccinations
✅ Regular deworming
✅ A comprehensive veterinary health examination
✅ Microchipping for permanent identification

Health Testing & Genetic Screening

We believe in proactive health screening to preserve the Labrador Retriever’s exceptional temperament and soundness. Every parent dog in our breeding program undergoes extensive health testing and certifications:

🦴 Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Certifications – Evaluated for hips, elbows, heart, and eyes.

🧬 Paw Print Genetics Panel Testing – Screening for inheritable conditions, including:

  • Centronuclear Myopathy (CNM)
  • Cystinuria
  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)
  • Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC)
  • Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis (HNPK)
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd)

These genetic tests help us ensure that each puppy has the best possible start in life and minimizes the risk of passing on hereditary diseases.

Puppy Placement & Ownership Commitment

🐾 Puppies are ready to go to their new homes at a minimum of 8 weeks old.
🐾 Each puppy comes with a comprehensive Puppy Packet, which includes:

  • AKC registration paperwork
  • Veterinary health records
  • Feeding and care instructions
  • Lifetime breeder support

Older Dog Availability

Occasionally, we have older dogs available for placement. These dogs come with full health records, including all veterinary care and testing history. However, AKC registration will only be transferred after proof of spay/neuter unless they have already been altered before leaving Overlook.

Deposit & Reservation Policy

We require a non-refundable deposit to reserve a puppy or dog. If we are unable to fulfill your request, your deposit may be applied to a future litter or available dog.

Overlook Mountain Labradors is dedicated to producing healthy, well-socialized Labrador Retrievers that make exceptional companions. We stand by our breeding program and remain a lifelong resource for every puppy we place.
